In 2021 we built a rally 912 to run in the historic rally events put on by the Hero-Era organization.

Initially intended for the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, this car was built for the 37-day, 15,000-kilometer rally from Beijing to Paris. Originally slated for 2022, the event had to be postponed due to challenges like the Covid pandemic and other political hurdles.

In these long-distance rallies, each car has to carry its own gear, including tools, spare parts, camping gear, and other personal items. So, having ample and practical storage was a big focus while building this car.

Safety was another priority. We put in a custom roll cage that is safe for the occupants and also makes it easy to climb in and out. This roll cage is tied into all suspension points of the car to add strength to the chassis, especially for rough off-road stretches during the race.

In preparing the car for off-road racing, we implemented some specific modifications aimed at practicality and performance. Notably, we addressed the challenge of dust by relocating the off-road air filter inside the car (pictured right). This decision was made to minimize the amount of dust drawn through the filter.

To protect the underside of the car, we installed a Tuthill Porsche rear skid plate, providing essential protection for the transmission and engine. On the front end, we made a custom skid plate to shield the fuel tank and optimize the vehicle's entry angle during off-road conditions. This custom skid plate was seamlessly integrated with an additional front bumper bar, reinforcing the factory front bumper. These modifications enhance the car's durability and performance in these demanding off-road racing environments.

Under the guidance of Jack Morris, significant attention was given to the construction of the engine and transmission. Special thanks to Jack and JB. The engine was meticulously built with a focus on reliability, simplicity and low-end torque, while maintaining stock displacement. Recognizing the challenges of encountering low-octane fuel in countries like Kazakhstan, Morocco, Mongolia, etc., we built the engine to a lower compression for better adaptability.

The transmission underwent a comprehensive rebuild, again ensuring reliability. To enhance off-road capabilities, a limited-slip differential was added, contributing to improved traction and maneuverability in challenging terrains.

The car underwent meticulous testing over a 1000-mile span before its delivery. To assess its capabilities, the vehicle was rigorously driven through the challenging terrains of Utah and Colorado deserts. Additionally, it endured a comprehensive trip from Washington state back to Utah, ensuring that it was thoroughly tested and inspected for optimal performance upon delivery.
